chCounter Widget
A visitor counter is really good to test how many visitors your website has. I think chCounter is the coolest counter software on the web. It is much more than a ordinary counter, but also records all kind of possible useful data about a websites visitor. To easily include the counter output into a Wordpress blog I decided to develop a widget plugin.
Preliminary Setup of chCounter
The plugin really only provides an easy integration of chCounter into Wordpress as Widget and NOT the counter itself. First download chCounter and extract it to a folder of your choice. I usually extract it to
/chcounter
Afterwards you need to install the counter. This is pretty easy. Edit the file config.inc.php in the chCounter directory includes to reflect your database settings. I recommend using the same settings as for Wordpress, because then you have everything in one database. Next install the counter via the webinterface. Direct your browser to
http://www.yourDomain.tld/chCounterDirectory/install/install.php
and follow the instructions. Finally you can install the Wordpress plugin. In the Plugin Settings you will be asked a chCounter Path. Set there the path to chCounterDirectory. In the above example this would simply be chcounter.
Installation
This is easy. Simply extract the files to your plugins directory or, if you use Wordpress 2.7 you can use the integrated installation method. Afterwards go to Settings -> chCounter and insert necessary options.
Usage
The plugin supports all 20 output values that chCounter can display. First you need to set chcounter path where it is installed. You can also make the widget invisible, but still have it active and collecting data. The needed output values are easily added to the active widget via drag & drop. In the sidebar of this page you can see a possible display of the widget.
